New lift in old staircaseSt Peter's is widely recognised as the finest and best preserved of the three churches designed by Soanes while he was an advisor to the Church Building Commission. The west front of the church, which can be seen from the Walworth Road, comprises an Ionic portico flanked on either side by single bays. The slim tower consists of two very different stages, supporting a small dome and topped - controversially at the time - by a weather vane. A frieze running around the front and sides of the building features the key design as used in other Soanes buildings, notably the Dulwich Picture Gallery. The crypt, which was built to store coffins, is a splendid example of early nineteenth century brickwork engineering.
